Introduction
Charles Correa Associates created this research and diagnosis research centre in Lisbon, where the highest patterns of science and modern medicine are studied in order to help people to fight diseases such as cancer, brain damage and blindness. To allow this to happen, a piece of architecture was created. “Arquitetura como escultura. Arquitetura como Beleza. Beleza como terapia.” A quote by the architecture that built this centre, which can be translated into “Architecture is like sculpture. Architecture is like beauty. Beauty is like therapy.” Charles Correa
The location, where the river meets the ocean, is the place where Sir Henry, the Navigator, Vasco da Gama and other Portuguese departed for their discovery journeys around the world – the perfect metaphor to the discoveries of nowadays modern science.
Three units create the project. The largest one for the scientists and doctors, the second largest one for the arts, events, and exhibitions, and the third one being the amphitheatre that is exposed to the city. These were organized in order to create a 125-meter-long route, diagonally crossing the area. This route is inclined and as it continues, the sky is the only viewing perception, when looking in the direction of the river. At the end of this route, there are two large pillars made of rock and when you reach the end of the route, a body of water is now visible, that seems to be connected to the river. In addition, in the centre of this body of water, there is an object in an oval form, made of steel that reflects the blue sky and clouds.
